As NLPers, questions are some of the best tools in our arsenal. They can be used anywhere, tailored to any outcome or audience and when used well, guide attention, steer perception and unlock the door to changing anyone's mind.

The very best questions transform how we look at things and in doing so unlock more of our potential.

That's why I've curated 36 of the best questions readers submitted.

36 Power Questions For Your Toolkit:

(Organised by function.)

Opening Questions:

  • What’s on your mind?

  • What do you want?

  • How would you like things to be X weeks/months from now?

  • What’s most important thing you want to work on together right now?

Direction Building Questions: 

  • What do you want specifically from our time together?

  • What would be even better than that?

  • Who do you want to be that you are currently not being?

  • What are you doing that you want to stop doing?

  • What would be a great result for you to achieve this month?

  • What would make the effort worthwhile?

  • What won't you get if you don’t get the results you want?

Reflection Focused Questions:

  • Where are you living with your problems rather than solving them?

  • Knowing what you now know, if you were to decide today to start doing X [some behaviour, venture or goal] would you? If not, then why do you persist?

  • Who’s line of thought is this?

  • Who is imposing this limit on you? What would you rather be dealing with?

Resource Building Questions:

  • What’s possible for you when you are like this? (Associated fully into a positive state.)

  • Who are you doing when you are at your very best?

  • What are the things in your life that really worked?

  • What went great for you in that situation?

  • What are you always doing whenever you are moving in the direction you want to go with your life?

  • What resources could you develop or acquire to transform this situation?

Questions That Challenge Limitations:

  • When did you start thinking that way?

  • Who are you afraid to fail in front of?

  • What is your thinking reinforcing?

  • How’s that working for you?

  • How are you making this important? 

  • Where did you get that load of sh*t from?

  • Why not?

Self-Coaching Questions:

  • What one question would create the biggest impact here?

  • What does this person need to solve their own problem?

  • How best can I be most useful to the person?

  • What am I missing/overlooking here?

Planning Questions:

  • How can you implement this?

  • Where and when will you take action?

  • What’s one thing you can do right now to get things going?

  • What’s the next physical action for you here?

  • What are you going to do next?
