Watch Michael Take a Belief Apart in Under Two Minutes

Tom O'Connor

Many people think the Meta Model is a tool for spotting linguistic violations. Spot the deletion. Flag the distortino. Ask about the missing noun.

That's the textbook NLP but it's not how masters of NLP actually use it.

The real Meta Model isn't about picking a sentence apart word by word. It's about seeing the whole structure someone's built in their head, and finding the one or two questions that brings the whole thing down.

Watch Michael do exactly that in this video in this playful demo of a real client conversation. He's not hunting for single patterns. He's taking the entire statement a client hands him, all at once, and using it to move their thinking somewhere else entirely.

This is just one piece of how masters of change use the technology.

Here's somethings to watch for, which aren't covered in NLP trainings:

  1. Michael works the whole statement, not the pieces. Instead of chasing individual words, he takes the belief as one structure and finds the single point where it gives way. No "what's stopping you?" No working through a list of patterns one at a time.
  2. He picks a direction before he speaks. Using the Framing Tool, Michael decides where he wants the person's thinking to go before he asks anything. Up towards values. Sideways in time. Down to something concrete. When you know the Framing Tool, the Meta Model stops being a set of questions and a pattern identification and pattern making tool.
  3. Michael puts the decision back in time so he can re-introduce choice into a run-away strategy.
  4. He alters the frame of reference and seeds suggestions entirely conversationally.
  5. He extends the client's map beyond its limits so a new reality becomes possible.

These are just a few of the counter-intuitive things experts with the tech do. Yet none of this is what gets taught on a standard courses. This is the stuff early-pioneers of NLP know that is increasingly being lost to time. We're on a mission to change that.

More on this soon.

To your success,

Tom
