It’s a powerful heuristic that comes from the world of high stakes negotiation and one of dozens taught in our hit course, Business Breakthrough.

Many people experience anxiety when negotiating what they want.

They feel tension rocket up, at the thought of asking their boss, colleague or a key stakeholder a request, that they fear the other person can or will say “no” to.

But as you know, in life you don’t get what you deserve, you get what you negotiate.

So the better you are negotiating, the better you will be at creating the life you want.

Negotiating can be fun.

Of course before you begin to negotiate anything important, it makes sense to…

  • Know what you want

  • Know what the other party wants

  • Understanding what is perceived as valuable to both sides

  • Do a SWOT analysis on your and their position

  • Come up with your negotiation strategy

But before you ever open your mouth and begin to talk, I recommend you get crystal clear on what negotiators refer to as your “LMI”.

LMI stands for:




To leverage this tool ask yourself these 3 simple questions:

  • What would you like to have happen?

  • What do you intend to have happen?

  • What must you have happen?

Using this simple, yet powerful tool to organise your thinking and guide how you will act - ahead of time - is very useful.

You can use this heuristic in any important telephone call, meeting, negotiation or critical conversation - to achieve a much better outcome.
