NLP Is Not Therapy

(And Other Common Misperceptions)

A reader asked me recently:

“Isn’t NLP therapy?”

I replied “NLP is definitely NOT therapy!”

I know many people associate with NLP ideas around therapy work, they say what about the “fast phobia cure”, “belief change technique”, the “swish pattern” etc.

And I say what about them?

They are tools.

NLP is not therapy. It’s got many cool tools and techniques that are very useful for helping people make changes but NLPers are not therapists.

NLPers comes from a different orientation altogether.

And you are likely to set yourself up for failure if you blur the lines between the two.

NLP is about teaching people to run their brains better. It’s more about educating people how to use their mind-body and biochemistry to improve themselves so they don’t need a therapist!

This isn’t to say that therapy isn’t valuable. Of course for some it can be, but it’s important not to mistake the two fields.

This misunderstanding about what NLP is and how to use it also applies to when people try to use NLP in business.

Because so many practitioner and master practitioner courses over-emphasise  the ‘therapy’ influences of NLP. I’ve spoke with tons of people who are down right confused about to apply NLP in business/work environments.

They struggle to use it effectively because their training has lead them to think of NLP as only one way, one style and that style typically has a very overt, seemingly “therapy” type of feel to it that can’t be used in business.

And that too is totally wrong.

Why limit yourself?

If you have invested the time to learn NLP why not use it in business too?

It’s one of the most valuable things you can do.

Business is about helping people solve problems, capture opportunities and helping organisations and their people go quicker (aka perform better).

For those kind of outcomes, NLP has a ton it can offer!
